I have heard of Ocean Kayaking but never done it myself. I can see the attraction though… I thoroughly enjoy kayaking on rivers but I can see the excitement of battle the waves and unpredictability of the ocean. I found this article that gets me excited to try this so I thought I would share it with you.
Kayaking In The Ocean And The Equipment
By: Chris Kennelly
Obviously there are differing conditions when one chooses to go ocean kayaking, and attempting to go ocean kayaking in rough and dangerous conditions as a beginner is not recommended. There are a number of key factors that must be taken into account prior to kayaking in general. This would include getting some lessons, advice and instructions from a qualified instructor. It is of utmost importance that one does seek instruction as there are techniques and practices that might save ones life when pursuing a hobby or pastime kayaking.
Ocean kayaking can be viewed from various aspects in that one can view the kayak from a manufacturing perspective in terms of the materials used to make the kayak, as well as the desired seating capacity and the ultimate use of the kayak. The most commonly used kayak used in terms of ocean kayaking is the sit on top kayak design. This design is suitable for the occupant to be able to enter and exit the kayak easily on the beach, or even in the waves is necessary. This form of kayak is also safer for the novice ocean kayaking individual, as there is almost no danger of being caught inside the hull of the kayak, as with other designs, in the event of something possibly going wrong in the water.
The materials used when manufacturing kayaks, specific for ocean kayaking that are used by manufacturers have to be solid enough to be able to withstand impact in the ocean, such as from waves and crashing in to the sand of the beach. In the identification of these materials the manufacturers have found that a material should not be too flexible neither too rigid, to achieve a suitable balance for the materials durability within trying oceanic conditions. Hence most manufacturers use a medium density linear polyethylene which provides sufficient flexibility as well as stiffness, providing a longer lasting kayak and tougher material to handle the knocks and bumps of ocean kayaking.
Features that one might look out for in ocean kayaks included benefits such as molded foot wells, molded in graphics that will not peel or flake off leaving an unsightly mess, bungee cords that allow the user to secure items to the hull of the kayak, toggle handles at the bow and the stern; which will enable the user to transport the kayak easily, and if really required the hatch, which can be used to store small items in the hull of the kayak, usually within a bag to prevent it from sliding around.
As with anything in terms of purchasing equipment, one should consider the usage of the equipment, in terms of the toughness or environment that the equipment will be exposed to, whereby one will be able to make an informed decision, with respect to the materials and designs accordingly.
